My Schooling at Engabezweni Secondary School, Mpumalanga

My Schooling at Engabezweni Secondary School,              Mpumalanga
Badplaas is a small town, established in 1876, and is located on the seekeoeispruit in the foothills of Dhlomodhlomo Mountains (place of much thunder) where sulphur springs delivers +-30 000l of hot water (@+-50 degrees Celsius) per hour. The town is dominated by SiSwati speaking people of about 40% of the total population.

I started schooling at Amanzi Primary School in a village called Vygeboom Dam in Badplaas. I did my primary education at Amanzi from grade R to grade seven (7). Then I moved to Izithandani Intermediate School that is where is did my grade eight and grade nine. From Izithandani I moved to Engabezweni Secondary School where I did my grade 10, 11 and 12 (matric), both schools are situated in Badplaas.

My matric subjects were as follows
v  English First Additional Language
v  Siswati Home Language
v  Mathematics Literacy
v  Geography
v  Tourism
v  Life Orientation
v  Agricultural Sciences

There computers on the school’s computer lab but they were only used by those who take Information Technology as a subject, other than that there wasn't any other technological means for learners to use in their academics.

My favorite subjects at school was Agricultural Sciences and Geography. i enjoyed doing those two subjects.

My personal teaching philosophy

                                        My personal teaching philosophy

My name is Nkosinathi Nkambule, I am a student at TEC currently doing my first year of B Ed foundation phase and I’m going to be a foundation phase teacher. As a teacher I have lots of goals that I want to reach in making education better for my future learners. My philosophy is all about the goals and objectives that that I want to reach out for in making a learning environment a better place for everyone concerned.
My rational goal as a teacher is concerned with a number of issues such as poor performances of schools due to unprofessional educators and the issue of parent involvement in schools. As a teacher to be, I'll take the opportunity as a calling to change the world's negativity on education and make a huge impact in educating the nation and creating a better learning environment to my students.

As a teacher I'll be a mentor, a role model to the children by showing them the right way to success rather than just showing them how to pass only one test. To engage with the learners in classroom to enhance their understanding in their learning will be a priority to me. As a teacher my goal is to provide quality education to the learners in class but I will also be mentoring the learners in life as general since learners turn to make uniformed decisions due to lack of of knowledge and mentor ship.
In my practice as a teacher, I'll try my all means to provide necessary practical work to ensure the learners understand further, since we all know that learners like to explore and the learn like scientists. In every possible and legal way, I'll try to be the best curriculum interpreter and collect necessary resources to help the children gain more understanding. I'll always encourage an interactive classroom like encouraging questions in order to get answers.

The process of teaching and learning differs from private schools and public/government schools. The private schools are somehow better than the public schools. The issue of parents involvements in schools has a huge impact on the academic performance of the school. In someway the community should be involved in schools to help maximize the school's performance and to meet the government's departments half way in molding the future of the learners. We as the community and the environment around them, we play a big role in shaping their future.I vouch to stand as a mentor and not only preach but also practice what I preach in order for the learners to learn to do what is right, since we know that learners learn most by imitating what they have seen. In this regard I'll be promoting or illustrating the use of respect, organisation, punctuality, clear communication and being fully engaged to your work.

As a teacher I will also play a vital pastoral role in the community by giving guidance to the fellow community members like helping even those outside of my school. Being the an motivator will be a major tool of success for the learners because apart from school work, the learners are exposed to the real world and they also experience life difficulties and for that reason motivation will be highly useful for them. Learner’s role is huge in any learning environment since they are the main purpose of the school, they are the future of every nation. Learners provide a reason of practicing as a teacher for every educator. They have a responsibility of doing their work as expected. They should be placed on a conducive environment in order to perform to their best ability.
Helping students to develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment occurs through an open sharing of ideas and a judicious approach to discipline. When the voice of each student is heard, and environment evolves where students feel free to express themselves. Class meetings are one way to encourage such dialogue. I believe children have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and sure of what is expected of them. In setting fair and consistent rules initially and stating the importance of every activity, students are shown respect for their presence and time. In turn they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment
A conducive environment will always play a vital role in hygienic purposes and learners will be able to perform to the best of their abilities.
Another important element of my teaching philosophy is encouraging reasoned written and oral work, especially in developing logical arguments. A major factor of this is spending my time making suggestions, as students can only learn to present their ideas more effectively if someone shows them how and why modifications could be made to their natural style to make it clearer and I’ll always try to bring myself to their level for them to be comfortable to share their ideas with me.

Finally, I aim to encourage a sense of wonderment in the world around us, in order to know the world and the environment in which we live in better. I’ll always promote an active class in order to get more attention from the learners in that way the wont be bored. I will also allow informal conversation with them to know what is in their mind and also get a clear clarification of their background and family status.
My classroom will be a caring, safe, and equitable environment where each child can blossom and grow. I will allow children to become responsible members of our classroom community by using strategies such as class meetings, positive discipline, and democratic principles. In showing children how to become responsible for themselves as well as their own learning, I am giving them the tools to become successful in life, to believe in themselves, and to love themselves.
For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to install a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
